Spring is in the air and while the trees outside are budding with fresh, bright green leaves TSiBA is in full swing for the final round of lectures and exams. It has been a busy year and as usual, incredibly rewarding, challenging and energetic with many proud moments to share.

A highlight in the TSiBA calendar was celebrating our 7th graduation ceremony with the most BBA degree graduates to date including - for the first time ever - two Cum Laude graduates. Canon Reverend Mpho Tutu was a hugely inspiring Honorary speaker who posed the questions of “what do you want, how can I help” encapsulating a way of learning and engaging which our students currently experience in TSiBA’s unique Profile of Graduateness.

The start of a new season also brings farewell to two of TSiBA’s incredible, longest serving staff members Sandy Ueckermann, TSiBA Eden Director, and Dorothea Hendricks, TSiBA CT student psychologist, who have both left a profound legacy at TSiBA. Join us in thanking them for years of selfless service to TSiBA and wishing them well as they continue their careers, resolute to remain the social change agents they are – we salute you!

And to TSiBA’s friends, donors and supporters we wish to thank you for your unwavering support and continued interest as we get set to complete our 12th year of Driving Change in South Africa.

Yours in Igniting Opportunity

Since my school years in Cape Town I knew I wanted to start my own business as a fashion designer, but was so insecure about my lack of business knowledge my dream remained just a dream.

When a friend told me about
TSiBA and the opportunities to study business, I immediately knew it was the chance of a lifetime that I wasn’t going to let slip through my fingers.

TSiBA opened my eyes to a whole new world... one with endless possibilities. I learned that if I stick to my goals and work hard, possibilities can become reality.

What really stands out about TSiBA is the focus on developing students academically as well as one’s attitude using fundamental life values such as integrity, respect, resilience and responsibility. This has had a HUGE positive impact on my self-confidence and I have a greater sense of belief in my capabilities and optimism for my future.

7th Annual CT Graduation

TSiBA students are definitely not just a number to us; but with this year’s graduation the numbers do speak for themselves: 450 graduates and guests in attendance, 40 Bachelor in Business Administration degrees (BBA), more than double that of the Higher Certificates (HCBA) and 7 Postgraduate Diplomas (PG Dip SEC) conferred!

Another first was the awarding of an honorary TSiBA
Postgraduate Diploma in Small Enterprising Consulting to the inspirational, Luvuyo Rani, a former teacher who grew up in the townships and started his computer sales business from the boot of his car in 2004. Rani saw a gap in the market to provide IT services to the townships and first came to TSiBA’s Ignition Centre seeking help in drafting a business plan.

Today,
Silulo Uluthu Technology is a multi-million rand company offering computer training courses, internet café, business centre services, IT retail and repairs.

Welcome to TSiBA
Sam Noemdoe

The end of one journey always starts with the beginning of another and a warm welcome to TSiBA Eden’s new Branch Manager, Sam Noemdoe.  Sam is well rooted in this area, growing up in the Eden District with multiple degrees and an MBA under his belt. Teaching is Sam’s core profession and passion having spent significant time in corporate in the employee wellness industry as well running his own entrepreneurial ventures.

Sam says “TSiBA’s focus on uplifting rural communities gives one that opportunity to bring about positive change and I feel privileged to be a part of this journey because what is happening at TSiBA Eden is really integral to who I am.” Welcome Sam.

Eden/ Smollan Partnership

Two of TSiBA Eden's Alumni joined Smollan Group National HR Director, George Henderson, for a visit to TSiBA Eden to further strengthen our partnership which aims to impact the lives of our students and their communities by creating earning potential through employment opportunities.

In 2014, Smollan began collaborating with
TSiBA Eden with the placement of 22 graduates within their business. CPBA Alumni Thapelo Mokoaleli says “I met David Smollan at TSiBA Eden where he introduced us to their Graduate Programme. Soon I was offered a job starting as a merchandiser where I learned and developed so much.”

Thapelo currently works in Durban and is so proud to be able to support himself and invest in his future – coming from the small town of
Matatiele with high youth unemployment, and a meagre 5% of the population having access to tertiary studies, his story is an inspiration to his entire community.

Nqobile Bhengu
2012 BBA Graduate Alumni

Growing up in a small township in Durban I never thought I would be where I am today. However, God had His plan by opening doors for me after High School that I didn’t even know existed. In 2007, I relocated to Cape Town to join TSiBA - excited, and a little bit nervous, as I was leaving home for the first time.

Being a student at TSiBA was one of the best experiences of my life; teaching me to become an independent woman. All the hard work and sleepless nights paid off when I got the opportunity to do my IPJ (work internship) at
Novartis in Switzerland, travel around Europe and do research in Malawi. There is no greater feeling in the world than when I finally graduated with a BBA degree in 2012!

When I entered the working world I had no fears because TSiBA had prepared me well. I started my first job at one of the biggest FMCG companies in the country -
Unilever. Since joining them in 2013 I was never treated differently because I didn’t graduate from a big, well-known institution and I always had equal opportunities. Today, I’m proud to say I end my journey at Unilever as a top performing employee having been awarded a number of accolades which proves that it is not where you came from, but how you transform your knowledge and skills into delivering great results!

I'm now relocating from Durban to Johannesburg to take up a role at
Danone SA and again I know my foundation is strong and I will be able to meet my new challenges. Read Nqobile’s full story here

International News

Thank you to all the committed members of the TSiBA Swiss Verein who generously give of their time and expertise voluntarily to assist with TSiBA's sustainability efforts. They organised a fundraising run on 19th September in Zurich with the support of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) which was hugely successful raising almost half a million Rands which will go directly to TSiBA's Whole Brain Learning Programme.

This Programme is designed to help TSiBA students with vital numeracy skills so they can harness their mental power and creative learning capacity. This is achieved by integrating the imaginative, problem-solving and understanding functions of the right-brain with the logical, practical, and strategic functions of the left-brain.

Student Entrepreneur
Means Business

TSiBA student Siyasamkela (Siya) Kilani won 2nd place in the Engen "Pitch & Polish" competition organised by the TSiBA Ignition Centre. Siya's innovative business idea is to produce shoe polish from discarded, burned tyres from the 'tyre graveyards in the townships' and recycle into a viable shoe product.

This event gives young and up-and-coming community entrepreneurs the opportunity to test ideas and gain business tools to create slick, investor-ready pitches. Siya loved networking with other like-minded, innovative and motivated entrants, as well as mentoring school learners curious to know more about entrepreneurship as a viable career option. Siya’s talent did not go unnoticed by the event sponsor, Engen, who approached him to join their graduate accelerator programme.

TSiBA hosts 8th
NU Summer Programme

Another great TSiBA milestone in hosting our 8th Northeastern University USA  (NU) Summer Programme bringing together 22 South African entrepreneurs, 44 USA students, and 76 TSiBA students to promote cultural exchange and entrepreneurial activity.

This programme is so successful in giving students the opportunity to apply theory to real business problems and develop competence in things like interpersonal communications, team dynamics and problem solving. A bonus is the invaluable inter-cultural exchange, networking and new friendships that are made between students.
