Welcome to this issue of TSiBA's newsletter. We are approaching the end of the year, and the start of the holiday season. And what a year it has been!
 
We would like to thank you for making our 2009 a very special year!

 

 

 We wish you all the very best over this Holy Season - with Eid Mubarak celebrations ; the beginning of Advent leading to Christmas ; Chanukah and the many other special days that different faiths celebrate over this time.

 

We look forward to deepening our relationships with our partners, volunteers and wide circle of friends in the coming year.

Mandela Rhodes Magic strikes again - Twice!

 


Khanyisa Mtombeni, 2008 Mandela Rhodes Scholar joined by the newest Scholars - Asanda Dodi and Siyabonga Gobingca.


Final year students Asanda Dodi and Siyabonga Gobingca were selected as recipients of the prestigious Mandela Rhodes Scholarship. 

 

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is a prestigious bursary awarded annually to the country most promising scholars and Siyabonga and Asanda progressed from a shortlist of 117 applicants to the final 30 successful Scholars!


Their achievement confirms that TSiBA is indeed developing young people with exceptional leadership capacity who demonstrate social responsibility, entrepreneurship and academic excellence

 

 

 

TSiBA Eden successfully launched

 

On Friday, 23 October 2009, TSiBA extended its mission of igniting opportunity with the launch of its second campus in rural Karatara, on the Garden Route. The institution formerly known as Eden has become the first of TSiBA campuses outside of Cape Town. This expansion confirms that TSiBA's model provides innovative solutions that support government’s commitment to widening access to higher education and developing rural areas.

 

Deutsche Bank raises funds for TSiBA 
 

Deutsche Bank held their  annual charity trading day in November. A percentange of the earnings for the day were donated to TSiBA. The R500 000 Deutsche Bank  raised funds for TSiBA  will be used  for a micro-venture fund to assist  entrepreneurs and SME's to get to the next level and enable them to build more sustainable ventures.

 

  5 Fun Facts about TSiBA

1.    The TSiBA Entrepreneurship Centre assists grassroots entrepreneurs who are linked to TSiBA Education. 120 entrepreneurs have received financial, business, management and marketing assistance on a pro bono basis.

2.    The TSiBA Cape Town soccer team has stayed on top of its league ratings for the second year in a row.

3.    TSiBA Cape Town students staged the first Mr.& MS TSiBA contest with a twist, it was all about being a positive role model and leader without the emphasis on looks.

4.    TSiBA has 2 campuses - 1 in Cape Town, another in Karatara.

5.    TSiBA has 3 Mandela Rhodes Scholarship recipients to date!

 

Adri presented paper at international conference in Madrid.

 

In early November, TSiBA's Academic Director Adri Marais and Board Chairperson, Prof. Fatima Abrahams  presented a paper entitled " Improving Mathematics Literacy in higher Education, Post Apartheid South Africa – Challenges and Pitfalls" at an international educational conference in Madrid.

Also joining them at the conference was Morea Josias from the UCT GSB who co-presented a paper with Adri entitled "

Does an internship prepare students to become employable? A study of employer’s experience of internships in South Africa."

Volunteering Needs

 

We still need a number of volunteers for Foundation year.

If you or any of your colleagues would be interested to assist us with either lecturing of tutoring one of the subjects listed below, please contact lesley@tsiba.org.za

 

FOUNDATION YEAR - whole year subjects, 14 weeks in Semester 1 and 15 weeks in Semester 2.

Starting date for lectures in the new Academic year is
8 February 2010.

IT Skills, 2 tutors need for one hour a week each.

MATHS, 5 tutors for 1 hour a week.

MATHS, a co-lecturer  for 10 hours a week, this is a contract paid position.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATION, 2 tutors for one hour per week.

 

LEADERSHIP & SELF DEVELOPMENT, 4 facilitators per week.
