Renowned humanitarian brings message of peace to South African youth

26 Nov 2015

As a humanitarian and peace ambassador Prem Rawat has dedicated his life to addressing humanity’s essential need for peace with his extraordinary passion inspiring millions of people over the last five decades. His message of peace resonates with audiences from all walks of life, regardless of their education, beliefs, age, or status. Rawat has spoken in some of the most prestigious universities and forums around the world including Harvard, Oxford, Berkley and Salamanca and, today, at the Tertiary School in Business Administration (TSiBA) in Cape Town, South Africa.

Prem Rawat’s perspective on peace goes beyond words and is both practical and tangible where peace is possible; it just needs to be felt and when people are in peace, the world will be in peace. In the context of the challenges the world faces in 2015, and beyond, this message could not be more pertinent.

Rawat’s philosophy is integrated into his life-changing Peace Education Programme (PEP) currently running in over 48 countries and helping participants discover their own inner resources and innate tools for living such as inner strength, choice, hope and the possibility of personal peace. This is an innovative educational programme with a curriculum that consists of 10 videos each focusing on particular themes including Peace, Appreciation, Inner Strength, Self-Awareness, Clarity, Understanding, Dignity, Choice, Hope and Contentment.

Lerato Bontsi, 19 years, recently completed the Peace Education Programme and is also a student at the Tertiary School in Business Administration (TSiBA) studying towards her Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) degree. Lerato says that “before the programme I didn’t put much focus on my surroundings and how other people were feeling, but I have learned the importance of tranquility and being in a calm state which means you can think better and be fully aware of your surroundings and make better choices. I believe everyone should do this programme because it applies to all people regardless - it’s for all of us as human beings. Meeting Prem Rawat during will mean a lot because he really inspired me in every session especially after a busy, challenging week where I was able to reflect on my challenges and see whether I was still on the right path.”

TSiBA, a non-profit tertiary business school founded in 2004, is one of the institutions around the world running the PEP programme for students, some of whom will continue with the programme as Facilitators, to increase access for more local youth. As with all TSiBA students, Lerato is on a scholarship and not required to pay it back monetarily, but rather to pay it forward by transferring the knowledge, skills and resources she gains at TSiBA, including in programmes like PEP, back into her community.

One of Lerato’s peers who also completed the programme, Ndonwabile Ndengezi, a 3rd year TSiBA Bachelor in Business Administration student explains “The course reminds us of the basic principles of peace, because this what we all desire as human beings. We grow up thinking that peace is something that exists somewhere in the world outside which we need to find, but what we really need to achieve is internal peace, it’s within all of us, which allows us to deal with any situation in a proper and humane way. Prem Rawat’s Peace Education Programme really reminded me of the basics in our lives which we often neglect and has brought me a sense of peace which was greatly needed at a particularly stressful time in my life enabling me to find calm and manage my surroundings and let the universe take over the process.”

Another TSiBA student says “The Peace Education Programme has brought a sense of calmness to my life. At first I did not really understand the purpose of the programme but now I can relate to what is being said. I don’t share my thoughts but when I have written them down I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”
